Rumour Mill: Benjamin Siegrist on the verge of joining Celtic despite alleged Preston interest

Preston were linked with Benjamin Siegrist but the free agent goalkeeper is now on the verge of signing for Celtic instead.

North End have lost a total of six goalkeepers this summer, including star loanee Daniel Iversen and the now-retired Declan Rudd.

Newcastle United’s Freddie Woodman now looks set to join Preston next week in what appears to be a superb move.

Other goalkeepers have been linked with Preston as well though with Benjamin Siegrist touted for a move last month.

Preston were linked with Benjamin Siegrist

The Sun reported that Preston were in talks to sign Swiss shot-stopper Siegrist on a free transfer.

Siegrist, 30, has decided to leave Dundee United at the end of his contract this summer after an excellent stint at Tannadice.

The former Aston Villa stopper joined Dundee United from Vaduz in 2018 and has been simply outstanding ever since.

Now available for nothing, you can understand why many clubs fancy signing Siegrist this summer.

Preston allegedly had a look at Siegrist, which would have seen him reunite with former Villa reserve teammate Daniel Johnson.

The Scottish Sun now claim that Siegrist is on the verge of joining Celtic after positive talks over a move to Parkhead.

Celtic have emerged as the favourites and that report claims a move to Glasgow will come at the expense of Preston and Ipswich Town.

Siegrist won’t be going to Celtic as first-choice goalkeeper though and will have to play as second-fiddle to Joe Hart.

Scott Bain is also in the Celtic goalkeeping ranks, meaning Siegrist faces a battle for first-team action if he does make the move.

Preston won’t be too fussed though if that Woodman deals gets over the line, with the 25-year-old primed to become North End’s new number one.
