Report: Blackpool want to sign Preston-mad defender Rhys Williams

Blackpool want Rhys Williams with the Liverpool defender potentially on the verge of putting his Preston allegiances to one side.

Williams, 21, was born in Preston but was snapped up by Liverpool at a very early age – even after playing for North End’s Under-12’s.

The giant 6ft 5in defender has made no secret of his Preston allegiances having previously urged Cameron Archer to score goals for North End.

Archer did exactly that during his time at Preston, including the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Blackpool.

Williams is now likely to leave Liverpool on loan again this summer having endured a difficult campaign last term.

Williams joined Swansea City on loan last summer but was recalled by Liverpool in January having barely featured for the Swans.

Another loan failed to materialise and Williams ended up playing in Liverpool’s reserve side for the second half of the season.

Now unlikely to get near the Liverpool first-team picture, Williams looks likely to head out on loan again – and he could join North End’s biggest rivals.

The Daily Mail report that Blackpool are interested in a season-long loan deal for Williams.

Many Preston fans would say that they would rather not play at all than join Blackpool, but we have seen it before.

Adam Nowland was born in Preston but started his career with Blackpool before eventually joining North End in 2005.

The reverse has also happened; Tom Barkhuizen used to be a big Blackpool fan but seemingly ditched his Tangerine love after leaving the club.

Barkhuizen went on to become a Preston favourite even if his family remain Blackpool supporters.

Williams may now have a chance to turn out for Blackpool, and few could blame him for having some mixed feelings about making the move to Bloomfield Road this summer.
