Bolton officially sign Jack Iredale as Preston rumours can finally end

Preston had been linked with Cambridge United defender Jack Iredale, but he has now confirmed a move to Bolton Wanderers.

Iredale was linked with Preston back in January but Lancs Live suggested that he was offered to North End and wasn’t pursued.

Cambridgeshire Live again named Preston as a possible destination for Iredale last week, with Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic also keen.

Iredale’s future has now been settled after Bolton confirmed his arrival on Monday evening.

Iredale’s Cambridge deal ends this summer and he has already secured a free transfer which will kick in on July 1st.

Boss Ian Evatt was excited by the move, claiming Bolton have wanted Iredale for a while as they believe he is ‘very talented’.

Iredale, 26, had a fairly understated start in football, turning out in Australia’s lower leagues before heading to hometown club Greenock Morton in Scotland back in 2017.

Iredale headed to England with Carlisle United in 2019 but really kicked on after joining Cambridge in 2020.

Capable of playing as a centre back, left back or left wing back, Iredale has recorded five goals and six assists in 89 games for Cambridge.

That versatility means Bolton can now use Iredale in a number of different roles as they seek promotion from League One next season.

His status as a free agent may have appealed to Preston but the rumour can now be killed off once and for all with Bolton signing him.

You can still expect Preston to be in the market for a left wing back this summer.

Josh Earl didn’t quite take to that role, it’s unclear if North End can rely on Greg Cunningham and Ali McCann is better used in midfield.

Preston need one or maybe even two left wing backs this summer, and whilst Iredale won’t be joining, Ryan Lowe will still be looking to strengthen that area.
