Preston North End have been linked with a move for Northampton Town left back Ali Koiki – but talks are underway for him to join Sunderland.
Preston have made one January signing, bringing in Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer on loan for the rest of the season.
It’s hard to see too much more business being done, especially without some more players heading out of Deepdale.
Trialist Bambo Diaby remains a live option for North End, and if another player is to come in, it may be a left wing back.
Preston are short of options in that area, with Greg Cunningham, Joe Rafferty and Tom Barkhuizen recently having to fill in there.
Boss Ryan Lowe has admitted that he would like a ‘speedy’ option at left wing back, especially having previously viewed Josh Earl as a left-sided centre back.
One such option was linked with Preston last week as Football Insider claimed that North End fancy signing Northampton’s Ali Koiki.
The former Burnley talent has impressed this season, causing mayhem going forward for the Cobblers.
Koiki enjoyed a 10-goal campaign for Burnley’s Under-23’s in the 2019-20 season, showing what an attacking threat he can offer.
If Preston do want to sign Koiki, then they may need to make their move very quickly.
The Sunderland Echo report that Sunderland are now in talks to sign Koiki ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.
The Black Cats are offloading Denver Hume to Portsmouth, and it looks like Koiki is now the favourite to replace him.
Out of contract in the summer, Koiki could be a bargain signing – but it looks like Sunderland are closing in on the 22-year-old.
