Preston beat the deadline to secure the signing of St Johnstone midfielder Ali McCann – but feared a last-gasp hijack from Celtic.
That’s according to The Sun on Sunday (05/09, p62), as they state that Preston thought Celtic would come in with a late move.
It didn’t happen in the end as Preston were able to get a deal over the line – allegedly with just five seconds to spare before the transfer window shut.
Celtic’s interest in Ali McCann
The Bhoys have been considered as favourites for McCann for some time now, having spent time scouting him across 2021.
Celtic didn’t make their move though, allowing Preston to sneak in and secure McCann for around £1.2million rising up to the £2million mark.
Celtic fans were far from happy, taking to Twitter to suggest that McCann is just another John McGinn – a top Scottish Premiership midfielder who slips through Celtic’s net.
Is McCann a good signing for Preston?
We love this move.
North End needed to find more saleable assets with Ben Davies and Ben Pearson gone, and needed to invest to make that happen.
McCann appears to have an all-round game, and whilst Scottish Premiership to the Championship is seen as a step-up, he has shown quality even against Galatasaray in Europe.
McCann brings more quality alongside Ryan Ledson and Ben Whiteman in deep midfield roles, and at just 21 he has potential to make Preston big money down the line.
