Preston were tenuously linked with goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, but he has now joined our Lancashire rivals Burnley instead.

North End saw Declan Rudd go down with an injury in January, and brought in Daniel Iversen on loan from Leicester City until the end of the season.

Iversen became a fan favourite at Deepdale, and North end are now attempting to bring him back for another loan spell in the coming days.

In case Iversen doesn’t come back, Preston may have other goalkeeping targets in mind – and one stopper was linked earlier this summer in Wayne Hennessey.

The Welsh international was allegedly on Preston’s radar in April, with Football League World reporting that North End were fighting Nottingham Forest for his signature.

Hennessey has been released by Crystal Palace this summer and could have signed for free after mostly playing as backup to Vicente Guaita.

Nothing more came of the Preston rumour, and it seemed pretty weird anyway given the wages Hennessey would command at North End.

Today, Hennessey has completed a move to Lancashire, but it’s not with North End.

No, it’s with Burnley instead, with Hennessey joining the Clarets on a free transfer to offer proven backup behind Nick Pope.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell could go out on loan, so 34-year-old will likely start next season as Burnley’s second-choice stopper, killing off any lingering idea of him joining Preston.
